It was a very good year in track and field and marathons and ultras, for me.
Of course the highlight of the year was the 80 mile run. I have found out since my run that the record for 80 to 84 age group for a 24 hour run is 82. 74 miles.
HMMMMM. Oh well maybe there will be another chance to set the record when I am 90.

NOVEMBER 19, MONDAY 2012
I started the 80 mile run on Wednesday November 14 at 9:00 a.m. and finished Thursday November 15 at 8:50.43. a.m.
My physical bio:
I am a male 5 feet 8.5 inches tall, weigh 160, Very good health. I had heart problems in 1999 and had to have a stent put in a blocked vein. The stent lasted 2 years. I was having the same pain that I felt before the stent and so I went back to my doctor and he found 2 viens on my heart that were 95% blocked.
He said that I had 2 options,
1. take pills the rest of my life and take it easy, no strenuous activity.
2. Go ahead with a heart bypass.
Needless to say it did not take me long to make up my mind. I immediately said, "I want the by-pass"
The by-pass was done in 2001. I began walking and then jogging. I ran a marathon again in 2007.
In 2010 on my 78th birthday I ran three marathons in three days to raise funds for the Boys & Girls Club of Sequim, Washington
My aid crew did an excellent job helping me accomplish my goal.
The aid crew were my 2 sons, Philip and Bruce. my daughter Kim and her husband Dick and my 2 grandsons Jason and Douglas. Jason is Kim and Dick's son, Douglas is Bruce's son.
Dick decided to run with me the first 20 miles which turned out be 30 miles when he stopped.
Six mile aid
Then Jason ran with me for next 50 miles. Douglas started walking with Jason and I from about 65 until mile 70 then Bruce started walking with us the last 12 miles.
Dick and I started out at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday morning we were taking our time and talking about how slow we should be starting out. We shuffled along for 10 minutes and started the 5 minute walk. We were so surprised to see that we were at 13 minutes for our 1rst mile!!!!!! We immediately slowed down even more and we were averaging about 15 minutes per mile for the next 30 miles.
The aid people stopped every three miles for the first 30. It was great too have aid every 3rd mile.
It was about 50 degrees during the morning with some sunshine. Then in the afternoon it stayed cloudy which was great.
My 50 mile running partner Jason resting up for his turn
Dick and I cruised along on the first thirty mile route with no problems. I drank water every 10 to 15 minutes and ate a potato and a peanut butter sandwich every hour. The food was easy too eat at this point in the run.
As we approached the 26 miles aid station on our way back to the start/finish line Mary the director of the North Olympic Peninsula Boys & Girls Club and Mike the Editor of the Sequim Gazette came and ran about 3 miles with us. It was great to see them. Dick and I were back at the finishing/start for 30 miles in 7 hours and 55 minutes. I was feeling great.
Dick at the end of 30 miles
Chuck changing sock and drinking and eating for the next 30 mile leg
I changed socks and T-shirt and then drank water and ate a peanut butter sandwich. Then Jason and I were on our way for the next 30 mile leg. It was dark by this time when we started and we were going slow on our second 30 mile leg.
The aid people Kim, Bruce, Phil, Douglas and Jason
decided to have the aid motor home stop every 2 miles for the rest of the run. I started to run my 10 minute and walking 5 minutes and was doing OK.
Jason contemplating running with me for 50 miles!!
Jason and I talked our way through the night to 40 miles. At one of our #1 bathroom stops Jason stepped into a hole on the shoulder of the road and just about fell down. Of course it was very dark and we or he had his headlight off. I did not put mine on and the aid people complained all night because they said they could not see me. To me it was just something more to carry. That little incident carried us on for about 4 more miles.
It was little things like that that happened to distracted me enough to forget how I felt. My mind was still fresh and I was not in any pain at this point.
We were jogging along just before the 40 mile aid stop when a car stop on the other side of the road and a female said, "Chuck may I run with you for a little ways? I would like to pace you."
I did not recognize the voice but I answered, "OK". The car then made a u-turn in the road and headed back the other direction. After we got some water and a Clif blok and had gone on the route for about 10 minutes a car stopped on the shoulder and a female got out dressed in her running clothes with a headlamp and introduced herself. She lived on the Kitchen-Dick road and had read the article in the Sequim Gazette about my running 80 miles on my 80th birthday to raise funds for the Boys & Girls club in Sequim. Her name was Twyla. She had just run the Chicago Marathon in October and decided to come out and run with me. She ran with us for about 10 miles and then called her husband to come and pick her up. She certainly helped the time to go by fast with her new energy and sense of humor. She worked as a dental hygienist for a dentist in Sequim.
Jason and I worked our way back to the starting/finishing line to begin our last 20 mile leg. It was about 1:30 a.m. in the morning. I walked back to the mobile home to get a hot Chia tea. I had mentioned that a cup of tea would be great because I was getting cold. It was in the low 30's by this time. Shirley had made me a big cup of Chia and it was great.
I started out with a sore knee and I thought to myself. "Oh God, don't let this end this way." I kept on walking and the knee did not hurt after a while and I managed to keep on at about 2.5 miles per hour.
I stretched and put some arthitist cream that Kim was carrying with her and put a lot of that on my calfs and knees and it seemed to help a lot.
It was getting colder and when Douglas started to walk with us I put on tights. And also Jason gave me he light down jacket which was great. I was very cold for about 4 or 5 miles. Then clouds started to move in and it warmed up a little. All the aid people kept telling me that when it got light I would get a burst of energy. NOT, NOT!!!!!!
It was around 16 to 20 miles that I hard a problem eating. I needed the calories but it seemed that my body said no to food. Jason had run several long distance runs in and around Flagstaff. He had some bagels and he cut it in quarters and just about had to force me to eat it.
I did manage to swallow it down with the help of some water and lo and behold it did not taste bad!!!! This was my diet for the rest of the run. Douglas dropped out and now his father, my son, was walking with Jason and I.
We were walking along the Discovery Trail at about mile 74 when I had to go to the bathroom desperately. It was light out and there was now where to go. I walked over to a wooden fence leaned my head against the fence as if I were resting and just went right there in broad daylight. What else could I do. I wasn't going to go in the tights. UGH. Anyway no one saw me except my running partners.
Daylight about 8:00 a.m. November 15, 2012
I was really getting tired about this time. But I am so fortunate that I did not have any bisters or sore places that were giving me problems. My mind was still clear and I did not bonk out. Oh, I did have a time when I was having a problem with my stomach hurting. I could not figure out what was going on so I decided to take off my fuel belt which I had strapped around my waste that was carrying 2 bottles of water. I handed it to Douglas and after about 10 minutes I suddenly felt fine.
I had to do a dog leg at about 75 mile which was about 7 tenths of a mile down and back. I had told Philip that I was not going to do it because I was too tired but he put up such a fuss that I had to give in and walked to the turnaround on old 101 to get my 80 miles. I tried to jump up on the barrier in the middle of the turnaround and just about landed on my face. But I managed to hang onto a post that was there and just barely kept from falling.
We walked back to Evans road and then it was not too long when we saw the motorhome parked and the last aid station. It was 2 miles to the finish line. Joy and bliss. I had made it. We were just about a mile from home when Rosaura came jogging out to meet us. also the men from my churches men's bible study came driving by to cheer me on.
When I was about 2 tenths of a mile from home Jason called everyone to stop and let me run to the finish line by myself. I thought it was a great thing to do. So I ran on and Dick and Ray a friend put up a sign that read 80 and they had a long piece of scotch tape hanging on it and stretched it as crossed the finish line.
What an adventure it has been.
I started my training on January 23, 2012 and with a lot of help from my wife who helped me immensley with the right nutrition and had cold baths waiting for me at the end of the 30 mile training runs. And her making sure that I got out the door and did my training when I got lazy about.
SHIRLEY
With out her I would not have made the dream come true and then to my wonderful running partner Dick who was a great help to me on the 30 mile run. Dick you are a stud!!! And also to my son Bruce and his son Douglas for their help in keeping me going with their terrible sense of humor. DNF thanks son.
The aid crew Kim, Philip, Bruce, me, Dick, Jason, Douglas and Shirley in the wheelchair. WHAT A CREW, OXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
And a big THANK YOU JASON for knowing what to do to keep me from bonking out completely on the last 20 miles with just the right kind of food that kept me going. And then to my 2 dear children Kim and Philip for driving the aid vechiles for 23 hours , 50 minutes and 43 seconds without sleep and with such a good attitude<well most of the time> . To all who thought of me along the way and gave me such great wonderful encourage.
Kim, Philip,Bruce, me, Dick, Jason and Douglas
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.

Saturday night at 5:52 in the evening. I ran 6 miles on Monday at 12 minutes per mile with my 10 minutes run and 5 minutes walk.
Then another time on the bike at Anytime Fitness for 1/2 hour. And the other days just walking on the beach with the dogs.
I am a bundle of nerves most of the time so I do something that will keep my mind busy. It doesn't take much to do that. I only have one little brain.
I am hoping to do the 80 miles in 27 hours. I think that that figures out to be right around 3.5 miles per hour.
I will write all about my run next Friday. Wish me luck, think about me, pray for me on my run.
Continued......
Total for the week 6 miles
plus stationary bike and walking with the two little doggies.

WOW!!!!! Just 10 days to go before my eighty mile birthday run. WOW
I am already getting a sweaty upper lip.
I have cut back quite a bit on my training. I hope that I am not hurting myself in doing this. My cold has been the bane in my training. But just a little bit more time and the 14th day of November will be here.
It looks like the weather will be mild unless a storm moves in beyond what the weather forecasters know for now.
This is what I see sometimes in the month of November until March on my training runs. They are a beautiful bird.
My weekly training has been sketchy this past week.
On Monday I ran 10 miles. And on Tuesday I cut wood for 3 hours with a chainsaw. It was free fir wood so I could not turn it down. The pieces were about 18 inches in diameter. I loaded it by myself after cutting it. So, I think that was a good workout toward my run.
I ran 4 miles with Philip on Thursday in 50 minutes and 11 sec. Philip helped me load three pieces that were too big to handle by myself. We did this before we ran the 4 miles.
And on Saturday I walked 2 miles with the two doggies.
I am counting my mileage for the week at 16 miles. :(
Total 16 miles
Total since June 1, 2012 816.75

WOW!!!
Just seventeen days until the big event. 17 days :)
My cold has let up a lot and I am now back to running. My weekly mileage has not been what I want it to be but at least I am still, "out there".
The weather has been fairly decent. Just down in the high 30 at nights most of the time.
I can time my runs around the little bit of rain we have for now. Shirley does not call it rain but I call one little drop of water rain :)
Winter is on its way and the Widgens and other winter ducks are in the Strait.
I tried too run on Monday but could only do about 2.5 miles due to my cold. So I took the rest of the week off and did not run again until Thursday.
I ran 4 miles in 47 minutes and 27 seconds and felt great. That is with my usual pace of 10 minutes jogging and 5 minutes walking :)
And then I finished up the week with a 10 mile run on Thursday and a 6 mile run on Saturday. I helped Phil with his RV furnace and then I ran on my treadmill for 1 hour and 33 minutes and 11 seconds. Boy it is hard for me to run on the treadmill for that long of a time. I don't know how others do several hours on the crazy thing.
It is too hard for me. I would rather be outside in the weather running for 3 hours then on the treadmill for five minutes.
Oh well, to each his own.

My cold has not left and I am still feeling the effects on it in my running. I was thinking about how life is so much like long distance training and running. On short runs the body can get by with the distance because it does not put any pressure on it from the shorter effort. And so it is with life. Do only what is required and one can get by. Life goes on and it is OK.
But put a little more distance in say like 30 mile run once in a while and one finds out in a hurry that there is more to running than just a little effort and that is all there is to it. And also in life if we put ourselves out for much more effort it also will take a bit more energy and planning for the work that is involved. Whether it is manual labor or serving others we find out in a hurry what our security level is!!
So, back to running.
I ran 30 miles last Monday in 6 hours and 55 minutes. I think that I put out too much effort for the training run and paid for it. Same in life, I think we call it burn out. I did not run again until Thursday. It was a 4 mile day and I did OK again until the next day and my cold and the training caught up with me and I ran only 2 miles on Saturday.
My total for the week:
Monday 30.26 miles
Thursday 4.4 miles
Saturday 2.0 miles
36.0
Total since June 1, 2012 778.25

Well, we finally got some rain!!!!!! But so far it has not hindered my running.
I have not been getting up at 7:00 a.m. because it is getting colder in the mornings and also I am a wimp.
The dogs were Tired after my run also.
My Monday morning 30 mile runs have been pretty steady. I have run 4 of these long distance runs. This last Monday I ran 15.4 miles and then on Wednesday I ran 30.5 miles. Then Friday was a 12 mile day. But the running caught up in my mind and body. Saturday was going to be a 6 mile day but I ended up walking only 2.5 miles. Oh well, 2 days of rest and then on Monday a 30 miler.
It is interesting how I have a developed a 10 minute run and 5 minute walking routine. My mind/body has accepted this pattern and I am now very comfortable in it.
When I am out running for about two hours I just shift into this natural feeling or schedule and just continue on in my routine.
I struggled a couple of times in my 30 mile run. Once at about mile 12 and 13 I had to walk a ways and get my composure back again and then it hit me again at about mile 23. It is hard too get through those moments but I just kept on and on until I could run my 10 minute run again.
This particular 30 mile loop is a hilly course and it seems that it takes some out of me for a while. This is the first part of my 80 run also. :) :)
Shirley has been very helpful in making sure that I am getting the right amount of
nutrition. In fact she goes out of her way to make sure of this. She is a wonderful wife, and companion.
On my last run I saw three dead snakes on the road and two flattened out birds, and at least a half a dozen dead slugs. Oh, and a couple of live deer watching me and saying to themselves , "There he goes again. What a handsome and bright fellow!"
Well it is time to stop this.

Cold bug finally got me!!!!!
SUNDAY OCTOBER 7, 2012
Ran only two days this last week. I came down with a fever and a cold that I am trying to get over.
I ran 10 miles on Monday and 4 miles on Thursday. I felt bad on Tuesday and Wednesday but better on Thursday and decided to run 4 miles. I was OK but I should not have run any after Monday. Oh well, I will see how I feel on Monday the 8th and run then.
This is my first cold or incident that I have encountered since I started my training last January for my run. I guess the cold bug finally caught me.
So my total weekly miles for the week of October 1-6 is 14 miles.

Another long week of running.
I ran 30.01 miles on Monday
12 on Tuesday
4 on Thursday
11.2 on Friday
6.04 on Saturday
for a total of 63.25
You noticed that I have counted down to the tenths and 100 rds in my mileage. It is getting to be a long grind. But I am hanging in there.
I did not run today on Oct,. 2 because I am coming down with a cold and have decided not to run until Thursday.
I ran my 30 miles in 7 hours and 19 minutes. I am staying at about 4 and 1/4 miles per hour. This is a little too fast for the 80 mile run so when I do run the 80 I will try to stay at 3.75 to 4.0 miles per hour.
I am now running for 10 minutes and walking 5 five minutes. At this pace I can average 4.25 miles per hour.
I have made up my mind on the routes. I will run a loop route of 30 miles and then a out 15 miles and back 15 miles= 60 miles. Then out 10 miles and 10 back for a total of 80!!!!!!!!
The count down is now 43 days until November 14.
Then it will be starting at 9:00 am
NOW NEWS OF THE RUN OF THE YEAR. By sport writer CTM
At precisely 8:19.36 am on September 30, Kim Henrie started her Centennial Trail Marathon.
I started my reporting of her progress at about 16 miles. She was running along at her usual pace and was looking great!!!
I stayed with her for several minutes and she was in good spirits but tired from running up a gradual grade for three miles to the turn around at 13.1 miles. It was a sunny warm day. She was eating and drinking thanks to her aid person husband Dick. I did have a chance too see her again until about mile 24. Then,,,
This is time when most people who are in a race dread. It is called, "HITTING THE WALL". Or another term is, "BONKING". It all adds up to feeling like the world is closing around you. Please don't feel sorry for me or try to cheer me up. This is the time when you are just in yourself and please leave me alone!!!!!
And you fell like you just cannot go another step. But, but somehow you still keep going on and on and on regardless of the feeling. And then joy upon joy.....
AND SOON THE END!!!!
Kim, you did a great job for you marathon.

Well another week is in the past. I am still training for the big event. But it is wearing me down.
I ran 30.56 miles last Monday. It was hot, hot , hot my last 4 miles. I had to ask for water again about 4.5 miles from home. A guy was working on his hedge and he let me soak my head down and cool off and fill my water bottles up at his outside faucet and hose. I was still trying to maintain my 10 minute jog and 5 minute walk. But it was mostly walking the last three miles.
My time for the run was 7 hours and 15 minutes.
Tuesday was a 15 mile day but I didn't quite make that amount. I ran 10.6 miles in the afternoon and felt OK.
Then on Thursday I ran 6 miles. Felt great for the training run.
But Friday,,, I just did not feel like running one step..
So I cut and stacked wood for the winter for 5 hours in the afternoon. I think with that amount of time I got a good workout.
Then on Saturday I walked and jogged about 6 miles.
So all was not lost by not running.
The weather has been great. It gets warm in the afternoon but the mornings are OK.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 15, 2012
Another great week in the running for eighty saga.
I ran 30 miles last Monday. It was an out and back route. I left home at 7:15 am. It was cloudy and about 56 degrees. The wind was blowing about 5 to 8 miles per hour which made it a great day to go this distance. I ran out of water about 3 miles from home and had to beg some from a home along the route. The people were very kind to me and kept a watchful eye on me when they found out how far I had run. I think that they suspected a little bit of insanity. But I made it home without any further episodes.
My time for the run was 6 hours and 51 minutes and 50 seconds. I was very surprised at my time and how good I felt when I finished.
My good wife Shirley had hot soup and chocolate ready for me when I got home.
I ran 13 minutes and 36 seconds per mile. My marathon distance pace for this run was 5 hour and 59 minutes.
Every day of September has been clear and sunny with the temperature in the 70's. It has been a great month.
I was thinking about my training and the distances that I have been running and it is strange that now 1/2 marathon and even a marathon seem like a short distance.
My hard day last week was on Tuesday. I walked most of the time for the distance. It was a hard training day. But I felt good for the run on Thursday and decided to run 6 miles instead of running the 4 miles according to my schedule. I ran a little bit to hard for my 6 miles and paid for it the next morning for my 15 mile run. I ran out of gas my last 2 miles. And that is partly why I ran only 3.2 miles on Saturday.
I feel great about my total miles for the week. :) :)

Another week closer to my 80 mile run. It is getting scary!!!!
I ran 10 miles Monday at 6:00 am, 8 miles Tuesday at 6:00 am. And on Thursday I ran 4 miles in 43 minutes and 43 sec.
The weather has been very hot. In the day it is at least 75 degrees or higher. Cooler weather is coming Monday. The weather report said that we will be cloudy and in the 60's. That is OK because I am running 30 miles on Monday.. :)
I did not run on Friday. I was feeling tired and I guess lazy.
But today, Saturday, I got up at 7:00 am and ran 6 miles.
This is my 6-6 foot vault at the Senior Meet at Port Angeles in August. first place in the 80-84 age division. I did vault 7-0 on my next attempt.
Shirley and I put up 13 packages of spinach from our garden and then I cut wood with a chain saw for about 3 hours. So I guess I did a little bit of exercising for the day.

Can anyone tell me where the month of August 2012 went???
HMMMMM.... Well back to my running.
As I said in my blog of last week I was fighting the demons of anti-running in my mind. Monday was a hard day and then Tuesday was not too bad but Friday was a bummer again and I did not run.
But I made up my mind that I would run 12 miles on Saturday and so..... I was up at 6:00 am and out on the road. I started out by walking for about a minute and then a slight jog for about a minute and then I began my 10 minutes jogging and 5 minutes of walking. I finished my run 12.2 miles in 2 hours and 50 minutes. I was happy with my effort.
This is me putting on my attire at the Mallow Family Reunion!
Marylin is helping me. We had a scavenger hunt and I had to wear all the items that were on the scavenger hunt list.
The weather has been perfect for my morning runs. It was 49 degrees when I started Saturday morning. If it gets much colder I am going to have to wear a light pair of gloves. I guess that fall is coming soon so will have to get used to the colder weather.
Does anyone have any good ideas about always having a good mental attitude for grinding out long training runs back to back???? I know, besides not running long distance training runs...
Any next week is an easy week, 36 miles in total. I can use the rest because on Monday the 10th I have a 30 mile training run!!!!!!
Mileage for the week:

Since my last post I have done some track and field events.Sunday I Pole Vaulted 7 feet, Long Jumped 9 ft. 10 inches, High Jumped 3 feet 6 inches, Standing Long Jump 5 feet 5 inches, 50 meters 8 plus ? hundreds of seconds, 100 meters 18 plus ? hundreds of seconds.
On Monday I ran just 4.4 miles. Tuesday 2.0 and 5 miles on Thursday.
Rested Friday and Saturday for the Sunday events.
I was supposed to run 28 miles on Monday the 27th. I got up at 6:00 am to run but my mind rebelled I had started out with good purpose ?? I jogged for 15 minutes and walked for 5 minutes I did fairly well until about 4 miles and the effects of Sunday or my mind went South and I started walking a LOT. I struggled along and finally managed to run??? walk for 14.1 miles. My time was 3 hours and 40 minutes. What a struggle.....
Tuesday I slept in because Shirley had her pool therapy at 11:30 am. This was my excuse for not getting up at 6:00 am and I am going to stick to it.
Anyway I ran in the afternoon. I started out at Carrie Blake Park at 3:55 pm. I ran 17.2 mile in 4 hours and 5 minutes. I ran 10 minutes and walked 5 minutes for the run. I felt good after the run and am back to normal today ? I did not run today, it is my rest day.
I will give my mileage total on Sunday of this week. September 2!!!

SATURDAY 11, 2012
This was a different week in my training. I ran 10 miles on Monday, 8 miles on Tuesday and then, then, then, then,
No running until Friday evening. I was entered in and ran 40 miles for the "Cancer Relay for Life" in Sequim for Anytime Fitness. The relay started at 6:00 pm on Friday evening. I started at about 6:22 pm. I should have started at 6:00 pm but I was waiting for the official start. But a person was on their own and I started at the above time when it was pointed out to me that I had better start running:)
But this was a good training run for my eighty miler coming up in November.
This is Sunday evening and I am feeling fine. No aches and pain.
Thank God.
When I began to get dark at about 8:45 pm the luminaries were put around the track in memory of those who have cancer or who have survived cancer.

This was the finish at 6:27 am on Saturday morning. Taken after 12 hours and 5 minutes. If you count the laps it does not add up to 160 or 40 miles. But I ran 149 laps on the 8th or outside lane and I gained .1 every lap that I ran.
All of this adds up to 160 laps or 40 miles.
I started out much too fast for the run. I was running about 13 minutes per mile for the first hour and half. My friend Jay and owner of Anytime Fitness talked to me and suggested that I should try running 3 laps and walk 1. I did this or otherwise I may not have made it to 40 miles. All of this adds up to 160 laps or 40 miles.

I ran 2 miles counter clock wise, and then 2 miles clock wise for most of the run.
In the early hours of running I was not interfered with nor did I interfere with other walkers and runners. It did not seem too hard to keep my focus on the
run as
I circled
and circled
and circled
and circled
the track for 12 hours and 5 minutes.
Every lap was a challenge for the people in the Anytime Fitness tent to keep track of my laps. We worked out a system that when I had run a lap I would shout out LAP and hope someone would mark my lap on the sheet for me.
This seemed to work out for me most of the time???????
Once in a while later, in the night I had to start marking my own laps. I marked every other one or every 2nd lap on the sheet myself!
My helper Cooper who is about 10 years old was going to mark my laps for me. It was about 1:00 am. He was one of the few people who were still awake in the Anytime Fitness tent. He lasted for two of my laps and then disappeared in his bed.
I drank a lot of water and powerade the first 4 hours then just water for the rest of the running. I should have drunk more powerade because it had 80 calories per 16 0z bottle or at least drink 4 oz of water and then 4 oz of powerade.
I will have to start making a hard effort to do this in my training and the run :)
The temp when I started was in the low 70's. I changed my t-shirt about every hour because of the sweat. Jay brought me a hamburger at about 9:30 pm. And then Philip brought me my extra pair of running shoes and also brought 6 doughnuts. I ate 3 of these and beside the Gu, ShotBlocks and 2 Clifbars that was all of the food that I ate for the 12 hours. If the calorie count is right I used 4000 for the run.
I weighed when I got home and I was still the same weight as before I ran 160.
I learned two things on my this ultra distance. First don't start out too fast and second eat more solid food. In other words don't depend upon just the fast energy foods??? They are OK for their place but I should have eaten more carbs.
My observation about the night as I ran for hours in the dark. The big dipper does not change very much in the Northern sky! It was always there in the same place as I ran around and around the track.
And saw only 1 shooting star for the night.
I did not think the morning would ever come because the moon seemed to be hung up on the top of a fir tree!!! But finally started to rise up in the sky. There were no lights turned on at the track for the run and walk hours but it was light enough to see OK.
There were several bands playing on the south end of the track. It was very, very loud when I ran on the outside lane past that point.
A hard mental rock band played on the stage for about an hour. Full blast and singing at the top of their lungs. Singing? I kept hoping and praying that they or he would loose his voice after about a half hour of noise.
There were about a dozen belly dancers performing but I could not take time out to watch them. They weren't that interesting anyway. Laura, you could do a better job.!!!!!
All in all it was a great experience.

Still chugging along with my training. This was supposed to be a 58 mile week but I had to reduce the mileage.
Monday was 16 miles. Tuesday just 2 and then with Wednesday off it was 4 miles on Thursday, 10 on Friday 10 miles and Saturday 6 miles for a total of 38 miles.
I am holding up fairly well physically. I have been having a battle in my mind to put in the miles that I am supposed to be doing.
The body is OK but the mind is playing games with me and my training. I think that I am going to have to change my routes and see if that makes a difference in my attitude.
I have been getting up at 6:00 am and it seems to be working out OK. I catch a nap in the morning at about 10:00 am to 11:30 am.on most days.
My nutrition is working out very good for me in my training. Just eating normal foods, nothing exotic. Drinking a lot of water on my runs. I drink 3 ounces every 15 to 20 minutes. I also am taking a tablet for electrolytes plus shot blocks every hour. I will have too be upping my calory intake as I do my 50 to 70 miles weeks in September.
This week I am feeling GREAT. My first two days were done without incident. My 10 miler Monday was done in 2 hours and 15 minutes. And today my 8 miler today was run in 96 minutes.

I am having trouble with a virus. I don't know how or when it came to my computor but it came. I had to load an anti-virus on my hard drive to control it.
But on to my training.
I ran just 11 miles on Monday, July 23 and then 2 miles on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. I ran some intervals for the two days and each evening I did several 3 and 4 step runups in pole vaulting for that event on Saturday. And nothing for the rest of the events.
Is there anyone else out there doing this kind of training???
The National Senior Games (50 and up) for the state of Washington was held at the Tumwater High School Stadium. Olympia, WA.
I entered in 6 events. Pole Vault, High Jump, Long Jump, Standing Long Jump, 50 meters and 100 meters.
My long distance training did not seem to hinder my track events.
The results for my age division. 80 to 84 age division:
I am 79 but since my 80th birthday is in November they count the age as 80 for the year..
Pole vault 7'
Long Jump 10' 5.5"
High Jump 3' 7"
Standing Long Jump 5' 8 1/4"
100 Meter 19.86
50 Meter 9.71
Not bad results from my long distance training and hardly none for the track events. I was very happy with the results, especially the Pole Vault height.

My training for the last week has been reduced because of ill defined circumstances.
Monday I was at Easton, WA to be the Chairman of a Church Senior Citizen Retreat. I ran 4 miles Monday afternoon at about 2:00 pm. 85 degrees!!!!! It was a hot run but I managed to finish.
Tuesday I did not run. I came home in the afternoon. I ran 6 miles on Wednesday at home.
Then on Friday it was raining hard at 5:00 am. I got up and eat breakfast but the rain did not let up so I did the right thing and went back to bed. Later in the day I ran a 20 mile loop course starting and finishing at home. It took me 4 hours and 17 minutes. I ran 15 minutes and walked 5 minutes for the training run. It was a good training run. I felt good about it.
Today, Saturday I ran just 2 miles.
During the past week the Native Americans were embarking on a "Canoe Journey" that started with all of the villages on the coast of Washington, Vancouver Island, British Columbia and Puget Sound. These tribes 'PULLED' or paddled their canoes across and in the Straits of Jaun de Fuca to the beach in Sequim that used to be the place where the Jameston Indian Village was supposedly located. It is about .2 a mile from our house. Here are some pictures that I took of the event.

My goodness I was so busy last week that I forgot to write about my weekly training.
I ran 2 miles on Monday, 4 miles on Tuesday and 6 miles on Wednesday. The usual day off on Thursday. And then 10 miles on Friday and 8 miles on Saturday. I did yard work at home and then mowed the big field, (my extra income job),
It has been decent weather. Some rain at nights and great sun during the day.
My garden is growing especially the weeds. But I work on it a little while during the day and try to keep ahead of them.
Sunset on the clouds the other night.

Another week has gone by. My oh my were does the time go.
I had a lot of fun this past week. Went to a fourth of July party, of course on the 4th. Then Pole vaulted Saturday morning. Then went to visit my granddaughter Melissa and Brion and the 3 great grandchildren. I wore myself out and am still trying to recover from all of the action.
I will try to send some pictures of the pole vaulting that Philip and I did on Saturday. I didn't do too bad considering that I practiced about a half a dozen 3 step drills before I vaulted. I vaulted 6 ft. 1 inch. Philip did great. He won the masters set that I was in with him and about 10 other vaulters. I was the oldest vaulter there at the age of 79. Philip vaulted 11 ft 1 inch.
This is me clearing 6 ft. 1 inch
This is Philip clearing11 ft. 1 inch
But back to my training for the 80 miler. I ran 2 miles on Monday, 4 miles on Tuesday and Wednesday 6 miles. On Friday I will run10 miles and Saturday 8.
I am starting to do some small increments of weight lifting, sit ups and pull ups to help my upper body strength.
Sooooo.....
Continues until Saturday evening.

Not much running this week. I am going to pole vault at Alki Beach in Seattle on Saturday July 7. This year there are 4 guys in their 70's. Fred Z. 70, David B. 71, Gerrard old, (He is 77), and me Chuck M 79. Philip is in the same group. I don't know what they will do for awards. There are two younger guys, Philip 60 and Dan ? 55. So we will see what happens. The older guys are jumping at about 7 ft. to 8 ft. It should be a great day for the event. Pole vaulting at Alki beach is put on by the University of Washington. GOOOOOOO DAWGS!!!!
I ran two miles on Monday, 4 miles on Tuesday and 2 miles on Wednesday.
I am resting up for the Saturday event. :)
I weeded my garden and prepared the soil around the fence to plant flowers. It is getting late in the summer but they will do OK. We have a long fall growing season here.
The two Poms, Maggie and Joy, made it through the 4th of July fireworks OK.
This Rosaura with Maggie, Joy with her back to us and Bella.
We gave them some tranquilizers and they are fine today. Boy, what a display of fireworks here on the Jamestown beach road. The blasting starts anytime during the day and last until midnight. The fireworks are spectacular!!!
